Botulinum toxin (Botolinum Toxin) is a potent neurotoxin and originates from the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum. There are several types of Botulinum Toxins, and it is type A that is in Botox® and also the most commonly used.
Botulinum Toxin has been used extensively in clinical practice since the 1970’s in medical conditions such as muscle disorders and facial asymmetry. Cosmetic use started a decade later as anti-wrinkle treatments became popular. It has been FDA approved.
Botulinum toxin is primarily used as an anti-wrinkle treatment. Common areas of focus include:
It is also highly effective in managing excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). While it can be used for other aesthetic goals such as brow shaping or smile adjustment, these applications are more nuanced due to the complexity of facial muscles, and results may vary.
Botulinum toxin works by binding to nerve endings and interrupting the signals that cause muscle contraction. Since wrinkles form due to repetitive muscle movements that crease the skin, reducing muscle activity helps soften and prevent these lines. Over time, as the treated muscles remain more relaxed, the skin above them appears smoother and less lined.
The product is carefully prepared to be very safe for aesthetic use. There is strong clinical evidence supporting its efficacy and safety for treating lines on the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes. It is typically administered using a fine-tipped device to deliver the product precisely into specific facial muscles. Results begin to appear within two weeks.
As with any medical treatment, there are potential side effects. Serious complications are rare, but the most notable is the temporary weakening of an unintended muscle. Minor side effects may include slight bruising at the application sites. At Cosmoderma, all procedures are performed by fully trained professionals to ensure the highest standard of care.
Your appointment will begin with a free consultation with one of our experienced doctors.
Together, we’ll discuss your aesthetic goals, assess your facial features, and determine the most beneficial approach for you. We’ll also walk you through the potential risks and answer any questions you may have.
There is no obligation to proceed with treatment following your consultation. Should you decide to move forward, the procedure itself takes no more than 15 minutes, and you can resume normal activities immediately afterward.
You’ll be provided with an aftercare guide that outlines what to expect, how to care for the treated areas, and when to contact us if needed.
