What is Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a painless, non-invasive, skin-rejuvenation procedure using a combination of a fine abrasive tip and vacuum suction glided along the skin. The vacuum pressure, speed and abrasion are adjusted depending on the sensitivity and thickness of the skin and area.

Microdermabrasion is a physical, machine-assisted skin-exfoliating treatment. Microdermabrasion or ‘Micro’ has the advantage of being low risk and rapid recovery.

It can also be used before LED treatments and can often incorporate some active ingredients for a gentle chemical exfoliation.

Since microdermabrasion is a superficial, dead skin removal, it works best on improving conditions on the surface of the skin such as early sun damage, fine lines, age spots, acne, and superficial scarring.

The face is the most common area for microdermabrasion, it is good to remember other areas also benefit from the treatment including the neck, chest, back, upper arms and hands.

Microdermabrasion is quick and requires no prepping of the skin, sometimes referred to as ” lunchtime peel”’. The skin needs to be free of irritation and or sunburn, and intact with no infection precent.

Minimal to no recovery time is required after microdermabrasion people immediately return to daily activity after a session. Makeup, non-irritating moisturisers and serums can be applied right after the treatment and SPF will be applied before leaving during daylight hours.

The skin typically regenerates every 30-days, meaning microdermabrasion can be repeated every two to four weeks. Micro works well by itself and is often used to alternate with other treatments.

What To Expect?

The skin will be double cleansed and then assessed for suitability and settings. A gentle, chemical exfoliation will then be used to start the process before the mechanical part of the treatment will begin. The vacuum and abrasion are not painful and should feel like a cool, satisfying pass over the skin.

If treating problematic skin with pimples and congestion, further physical extraction of comedones (black heads) is often performed at the same time, giving visibly cleaner looking skin.

Make-up will sit better after the treatment and if need be (avoiding areas if they had extractions) can be used immediately after the treatment.

Your therapist will then apply SPF if it is daylight hours.
